Ely Cathedral

In the 14th Century one of the main towers in Ely Cathedral collapsed. The noise must have been tremendous with tonnes of masonry falling from such a height. With the tower gone the Bishop realised how lovely and light the centre of the Cathedral was and it is supposed that he wanted to emulate that with the new design.
Over the next twenty years an elaborate 'Lantern' was created with stone pillars and a giant green oak structure.

As you can see from the model it is a complex construction and took fourteen years to build. The uprights were hoisted as whole trees, with just their bases squared off so the could be fixed in position. The sheer weight of the structure is immense.
Inside of the framework are painted panels, high up in the roof. There is a guided tour up onto the roof which takes you up twisty staircases, through tiny doors, across section of roof until you get to the roof. Halfway through is the structure.
